Transfer Students

Welcome to UCSB! You've worked hard to get here and are about to embark on an exciting new adventure. Unlike freshman, you already have a lot of experience around college, which will help you along the way. But even with that experience, UCSB is a new place and it will take some adjustment to feel familiar with the campus and get connected to other students. And, the academics are going to be different from your CC, which can be a little shocking at first. Check out the articles in this section to learn more about how to draw on your strengths and manage the new challenges that are coming your way.

Roadtrip!

Developing Your Path at UCSB

Even though you've already been going to college at your CC, navigating the transition into UCSB brings new challenges that can feel overwhelming. Just like it took some time to learn about navigating your community college, you will also need to develop your own personal road map to make your pathway at UCSB.  Check out this article to read about how to draw on your knowledge and strengths that got you through your CC and learn about other resources to help you navigate UCSB.

So much to do, so little time!

Transfer students often feel pressure to fit 4 years of experiences into 2 years, especially when you’re surrounded by people who have been at UCSB since their freshman year. Two years is more than enough to make the best out of your college experience! Check out this article to learn more about how to set our own pace and get the most out of the time you have here.

Imposter Syndrome &

Knowing You Belong Here

As a transfer student, you may find yourself questioning whether you belong at UCSB and whether you can "make it". This feeling, known as imposter syndrome, can affect your self-esteem and lead you to feel isolated and alone. Check out this article for how to challenge these thoughts and own the fact that you do belong here.

This is Different from my CC:

Soooo Many More People!

When you are used to smaller classes at community college, huge lecture halls filled with students can feel more like a concert than a class. It’s understandable to feel out of place in such a new environment. Check out this article to learn how to shrink that big class into a more intimate experience that you are used to.

Balancing Your Academic Load

Even though you have been taking college courses for some time, transitioning to the pace of the quarter system and the rigor of classes at UCSB can feel daunting. Learning to balance your academic load, especially with taking upper division classes rather quickly upon your arrival, often requires some guidance before you feel comfortable.  Check out this article for some strategies for tackling these academic changes more effectively.

Making New Friends:

Breaking Into the Circle

It can be hard to get outside of your comfort zone and engage with new people, especially when other students who have been here for awhile have already formed some tight knit groups. It can feel even harder if you are a non-traditional student and may feel like you don't fit in with other college students who are younger or who don't share similar life experiences.  It can be tempting opt out of trying to developing relationships here and perhaps even just go home on the weekends. Read this article to meet other transfer students like you and also learn creative ways to meet groups in the community who are a good fit for you.

Maintaining Prior Relationships

It can be difficult to transfer to UCSB and "start over" when you have formed close relationships with friends and perhaps are dating a romantic partner from home. Building a social life at UCSB will take time and energy, and so will maintaining your connections to prior relationships. Read more about how to build new relationships here and maintain those from home so that you can get the best of both worlds.
