Navigating Telehealth

What is teletherapy?

Teletherapy (also referred to as Telemedicine, Telehealth, or Telepsychiatry) is a form of video conferencing allowing licensed psychologists, therapists, and psychiatrists to provide services to clients outside of the office, for example at the client’s home or workplace.
Many healthcare providers also provide their services online. Many students, either living at home with family, or with roommates, struggle to find ways to find a private space for health care meetings. The MHPs have listed some strategies for how to find some privacy and peace of mind for your next remote health care appointment.

Strategies for finding privacy

Locations for Teletherapy

  • Use a sound machine or White noise apps/videos
  • Scheduling around housemate/family schedules
  • Asking housemates to go to another location
  • Wearing headphones
  • Putting a towel in the crack under the door
  • Do not disturb signs on your door
  • Ask housemates to wear headphones
  • Schedule session when you know housemates will be out
  • Set up a codeword with your therapist to let them know your privacy has been compromised
  • Music library listening rooms
  • Reserve a library room
  • FT and San Rafael study rooms
  • Benches at IV Parks
  • Grass and Manzinita Dorms
  • Hiking trails near Loma Pelona
  • Empty education classrooms
  • Chairs and benches near Marine Science Building
  • Garages or cars
  • If you are seeing a clinician through CAPS, you can reserve a private room through the CAPS front desk!
Brainstorm some other ideas with your therapist or health care provider!

Telehealth Providers for UCSB Students

UCSB offers three telehealth options: UWill, Lyra, and LiveHealth. Each offers a different range of services, with varying insurance requirements. It is also possible to request for your clinician at CAPS to meet with you remotely.
